A Mounting Toll
As with the London bombings, Hurricane Katrina is spawning its share of collaborative coverage as residents and observers publish digital depictions and reports of the inconceivable.
Tragically, two breaches in the levees around New Orleans have opened. Water is now coursing through the streets as the US Army Corps of Engineers finalizes plans to stem the flow. The enormity of this thing is just beginning to settle on our country. Casualty stats are mounting rapidly.

Drew......Thousands may be dead. Do you think Hollywood will give to the Gulf like they did to Africa? I doubt it. After 9/11, 2 wars, and katrina our kids will have two constant variables, rising fuel costs and Everyday low low prices at Wal-mart. Joe
hi joe! thanks for reading my blog. i'm sure the casualty estimates are in the very early degrees of just that: estimates. makes me wonder (from) who and when aid will arrive from the far flung reaches of our nation. a few things are certain: this is unprecedented and the disaster areas are nearly inaccessible. i heard today that the big three US auto makers have relieved residents affected by this storm of payments for at least 90 days. also heard that Wal Mart was rushing in with supplies. i'm not kidding. just heard an appeal for hotels to open their rooms for refuges. . . but no price gouging (Senator Landrie, CNN.) at any rate, although it's not a perfect system, we do have an immense amount of private philanthropy to count on in this country. other nations' citizens pay higher taxes w/ assurances of a comprehensive government safety net. neither's perfect, just different. drew
